Tunisia - Chott el Jerid
>> Wednesday, November 09, 2005
Woken up before dawn, we were at Chott el Jerid to see the sunrise. Chott el Jerid is a salt lake of about 5000 square kilometres. Dry during the summer, it has some water in the winter months. As this was the end of October, there was some water to taste and check out the saltiness! Very salty!!! Apparently at some point, this was part of the Mediterranean Sea - and now it's in the middle of the desert!
The sunrise was phenomenal
Close up of the salt crystals - salt extraction is the main industry in the area
The salt lake went on and on and on
